Archive for August, 2011

Hello,

If you watched my August Favourites video, you may have seen that I am in LOVE with the new Katy Perry fragrance. I love it so much, that I thought I would do a full review for you all!

Here is what the Nordstrom website has to say about the fragrance:

“Purr by Katy Perry eau de parfum begins with the aroma of peach nectar and forbidden apple, evolves with a distinct floral bouquet of jasmine blossom, Bulgarian rose and vanilla orchid, and slowly reveals accents of creamy sandalwood and musk. Like the singer herself, Purr is playful yet sophisticated. Katy Perry transcends barriers with her music—so does her new fragrance.

In terms of appearance, this perfume bottle is AMAZING. I’m a huge cat fan, and this is just sooo cute!  The jeweled eyes add chic-ness to the bottle. Great job Katy!

Katy Perry’s promotional picutre. Its also features on the box that the bottle comes in.

Now, I have no experience what so ever with describing fragrances to people, so I apologize for that. However, the above description makes it sound very fruity/floral, with the peach nectar, apple, jasmine blossom, rose and vanilla, but I find that the fragrance is very… deep and romantic almost. I think that you can tribute that to the musk and creamy sandalwood as listed above. It is not in the slightest bit light, refreshing or brightly scented. It is very much a warmer, dark and delicious smelling scent.

I find that the scent lasts on my skin for almost the entire day. It is a strong perfume, so I would only recommend one spritz. Anymore than two and you may be drowning the people around you. Now, I know it may come off strange to say, and I must start this statement by saying that I have very hygienically clean in every way possible, BUT I find that there are a lot more…fruit flies… around when I wear this fragrance. I don’t know if I can blame that on the fragrance, or the weather outside… or it could possibly be that I am noticing them around more… and it is not linked to the fragrance at all.  I mean as far as I know, I don’t have a bunch of fruit laying around in my house, so where are they all coming from! Now having done my research as to what the scent is composed of, it would make sense that the flies would be attracted to the fruity and floral notes that make this fragrance. I know, I told you that statement was going to be weird, but it’s what I’ve noticed. However, it is strange, because the scent itself in my personal opinion doesn’t lean towards a fruitier smell, like I mentioned above, to me its a much warmer scent. This from what I can tell for me, is the only downfall, if you could even call it that, because I cannot pinpoint the source of these flies…. and it probably has nothing to do with the fragrance. But I’m probably just a bit crazy…like I said, I cannot describe a scent out to save my life.

I was lucky enough to find this perfume at Winners. I KNOW! Winners!! It was priced at $34.00 as opposed to the $45 I believe that it retails for in the store.  It was the last one there so I quickly grabbed it and walked away in a fast pace, as if someone would see that I had it and try to take it away from me. I’ve only ever seen this fragrance at Sears (other than Winners). It’s not even available on the Sephora website :S. If you are in the states, I do believe that it is sold at Nordstrom as well. This perfume launched in 2010, so it should be readily available for the most part one would think.

All in all, I LOVE this perfume. Its a great one, especially for the fall/winter season coming up as it can be a more of a deep and warm  fragrance. For the summer time if you prefer a lighter fragrance this is not the one for you.

Hope you all enjoyed this review, I have a couple other product reviews coming up and Shannon and I are planning some hair tutorials so keep an eye out for those!

Thanks for reading

Hi Everyone,

Have you ever bought a beauty product, had such high hopes for it, tried it out and hated it? Well I know that I most certainly have! I decided that it would be a fun video idea to share my purchase regrets with you all! That way, when you’re out experimenting with new products you won’t buy the bad stuff! I have to say that in the recent months I’ve really been trying to save my money, and not buy as many new beauty products. I’ve also been careful to do my research before I buy a product. Even if I search for reviews on my phone when I’m in the store contemplating a purchase! Having internet on your phone is truly a miracle. It’s not just the high end makeup that I like to research before shelling out the money, I like to look into the drugstore products as well. Cause lets face it, there are some really horrible products out there.

Please take a look at the products that I was disappointed with:

Well that was it. I hope that this video helps all you guys out in the long run. Let us know in the comments below if you’ve ever bought a beauty related product that you were really disappointed in!

Last night I figured, since I had time, I would try out the new lip plumping product Caitlin received in her August Luxe Box.

City Lips is an award winning product that utilizes “Oligopeptide ” technology which acts to increase collagen production in your lips resulting in a plump pucker. City Lips claims you should see greater overall lip volume, and decreased wrinkles in and around your lips. To top it all off, City Lips lip plumper also gives you a beautiful glossy lips look.

This is only a sample size, but the full size version retails for $35.00 on the City Lips website.

I really like the applicator; a brush instead of a doe foot applicator. I find brushes to be a bit more precise. However, since this is just a clear gloss, one can afford to apply a little haphazardly with no need to worry about how it looks.

Here are some photos of my lips before, and after using the City Lips product:

BEFORE: These are my lips without before applying City Lips. I was just wearing some good ol' Carmex for some moisture.

This was taken right after application. I personally don't like glossy lips on myself, but for those of you who do, it doesn't feel too sticky and I found it wears for a couple hours.

AFTER: This photo was taken approximately 10 minutes after the inital application. As you can see the lines in my lips are visibly reduced and my lips have a much fuller appearance.

I have to admit I was fairly skeptical of any lip plumping products. I already have quite full lips, and the ones I have tried in the past didn’t make much of a difference. PLUS! other lip plumpers feel too tingly, almost painful. I also heard that using lip plumpers is actually bad for your lips because the products contain ingredients that irritate the delicate skin on your lips, thus breaking down collagen and promoting premature aging.

However, since City Lips actually increases collagen production, I feel a bit safer using this product. Furthermore, my lips were in no way painful after applying the product. In fact, I didn’t really feel much of anything including a tingling sensation. It was a rather bizarre feeling when I would rub my lips together though. It felt like they were a bit swollen, but without any pain, so I guess that means it was working!

How long does the effect last?

I noticed the effects of City Lips for about 2 hours, at which point, you might want to reapply. The gloss did last a couple hours and would probably have lasted longer if I took more care while eating and drinking.

Would I recommend City Lips?

I am actually surprised at how well City Lips worked! and I would definitely recommend City Lips for those of you who want to see visibly fuller lips without and major procedures! As you can see, City Lips lived up to their claims of reducing lip wrinkles and it’s easy enough to apply on the go. The product also worked to provide fuller looking lips in as little as 5 – 10 minutes which is very nice as well – no waiting around. Basically, City Lips works, and you get instantly fuller lips for a couple hours!

I hope this was helpful and thanks for reading!

If you’ve tried City Lips please share your experiences in the comments! 🙂

Hello Everyone!

Caitlin here. Today I would like to dedicate my blog post to my dear friend Arielle. She is going to be going for surgery tomorrow! The surgery itself is very basic, however her healing time is a little bit longer. So! In the spirit of having no time, and needing an excuse to make a cake, Shannon and I decided to make her a “Get Better Soon” cake that she can eat while she is taking some time off to heal and get better!!

Here we goo!

I took my inspiration for this cake from this blog post I found, just in case you would like to see!: http://www.bakedecoratecelebrate.com/projects/brimmingwithroses.cfm?cat=1

Shannon and I used the same simple marshmallow fondant recipe for the roses and to cover the cake 🙂

To make simple fondant roses I used this youtube video as reference: http://youtu.be/Uzp3XfhUpQ4

I hope you enjoyed this post! And love the cake as much as we did!

Thanks for reading 🙂

Today Caitlin got her monthly Luxe Box in the Mail! For those of you who don’t know, Luxe Box is like a Canadian version of Birch Box and you get deluxe sized samples mailed to you each month for about 10 dollars a month.

Excited!

Unfortunately Caitlin got a really bad colour nail polish.. Brown!? Really!?

Cheeky Monkey Nail Polish in Earth Momma

Huuuge sample of Proclaim Hand and Body Lotion! It smells really good (almost sweet like chocolate?) and it seems to be very moisturizing and soaks in quickly.

City Lips Lip Plumper. We have done a separate review on this product so be sure to check it out!

Forbidden Euphoria perfume by Calvin Klein.

The perfume came as a convenient little roller ball! Very smart packaging in my opinion.

Caitlin's Luxe Box came with an extra gift from Sheyna

Hey Everyone!

I thought it might be useful for people to see what kind of maintenance we’re doing after the eat clean stripped 28 day plan we did. Here is an example of what I eat in a regular day (if i’m being good with no extra candies or anything hahah which does happen from time to time). Maybe you can incorporate some of these ideas into your clean eating plan!

Breakfast:

Here is an example of a fairly routine breakfast for Caitlin and I. We've been on a huuuge oatmeal kick that last little while! I love to cook my old fashioned oats on the stove and stir in about 1-2 tbsp of ground flaxseed once it's come off the heat. I then like to top it with 1/4 cup plain greek yogurt, fresh or frozen berries (whatever I have on hand), 1/2 a banana and sprinkle with cinnamon!

Snack 1:

Here I made whole grain toast (well done! I love very crisp toast, almost burnt! haha), topped with fresh mango salsa, a sunny side egg, a little cilantro for taste and colour and a little salt and pepper. I also included 2 celery sticks one with 1/2 tbsp of almond butter spread on it and raisins on top (ants on a log!) and one I just left plain. If I was still on the eat clean stripped diet plan, I would have left out the toast.

I also like to drink some tea either between meals or with my snacks. Here I made some "Green and Fruity" tea Caitlin bought from David's Tea.

Meal 2:

Here I sauteed some Kale and Broccoli in about 1 tbsp of olive oil with some sweet onion, salt, pepper, chili flakes and onion powder. I also added a bit of cilantro! I love the bright, fresh flavor it gives to any dish. I topped it with textured veggie protein, which doesn't sound appetizing, but it has a nice, hearty "meaty" texture for those of us who are vegetarian. The veggie protein is flavourless so I like to add salt and pepper, balsamic vinegar and spicy siracha sauce to taste! It adds a really nice texture and is packed full of protein!

Snack 2:

I just sliced a nice, ripe navel orange that is cold from the fridge (I don't enjoy eating room temperature oranges as much, they're not as refreshing!). I also cut some green bell pepper slices to be eaten with about 1 tbsp of hummus.

Normally with each of my small meals I have at least one glass of water with it. Also normally I would have another meal in there during the day but I got up really late today which kind of threw off my schedule! hahah Normally on the eat clean diet you eat 5-6 small meals, but here I only got to 4. My last snack was at 7:30pm and since the small meals are spaced at around 2-3 hours apart it would make my last meal very late. If I was to make another meal I might have chosen to make a simple spinach salad with chickpeas for protein and what ever veggies I have on hand with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar. I decided not to eat one more meal because according to the eat clean diet you shouldn’t eat at least 3 hours before bed.

For exercise I normally like to alternate weights one day and some sort of cardio the next and take Sundays as a break from excising. Today I walked about 4km just fast enough to get the blood pumping, then did some stretching.

I hope this post was helpful to those of you who wanted to try the eat clean diet! Share your eat clean menu ideas in the comments if you like!

Thanks for reading 🙂
