Hi Everyone!

I recently just started and finished reading the book Something Borrowed written by Emily Giffin. It took me about 4 days to read. It is the first book of a two part series. A heads up, this post does have some spoilers in it if you haven’t read the book!! It is a book review after all.

It was a great book! Probably would give it a 4 out of 5. Marking off one point because I did find it to be a bit repetitive. Here is a description that I took from Emily Giffin’s website:

About the Book

Something Borrowed

Something Borrowed tells the story of Rachel, a young attorney living and working in Manhattan. Rachel has always been the consummate good girl—until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend, Darcy, throws her a party. That night, after too many drinks, Rachel ends up in bed with Darcy’s fiancé.

Although she wakes up determined to put the one-night fling behind her, Rachel is horrified to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one guy she should run from. As the September wedding date nears, Rachel knows she has to make a choice. In doing so, she discovers that the lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren’t always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness. Something Borrowed is a phenomenal debut novel that will have you laughing, crying, and calling your best friend. (From the Emily Giffin Website)

I’m not too sure about the calling my best friend, or crying but it did find myself laughing a bit. It’s interesting that when I see a movie that is based on a novel, I always want to read the book first. So that is exactly what I did. And I’m glad I did, especially since I read a lot better when I can see the characters in my head, so seeing the trailer for the movie made me think of the actors/actresses a their characters when I read the book. I liked the idea of seeing Kate Husdon as Darcy, and Ginnifer Goodwin as Rachel. I really like John Krasinski so I was really happy to think of Ethan being him. That and I like the idea of being able to compare the original book to the movie!

It was an easy read, something that you could pick up and read within a day! No, the letters are not abnormally large, its just one of those books that are fun to read! The characters in the book all had something that I think each and every reader can relate to. Whether youre the co-worker at work waiting for the dirty details on the night before, or youre the one telling them! Theres always that friend who lives far away, and for some reason you are able to tell that person everything, because its almost as if its okay to tell them, cause youre not talking directly to their face. We all have one of those.

SPOILER ALERT: All in all, there were some parts of the book that I found I would have liked to be different. I wished so much that Ethan and Rachel would get together, I felt that Rachel deserved him, and I also wished that the book didn’t carry along being the same thing just happening over and over again.. if you have read the book you may or may not know what I am talking about. The fact that they are having an affair is scandalous yes, but the fact that it seemed to repeat itself the whole book is what got me. There were still little plots thrown in there, like the wedding, the beach house, the  baby shower, a bit of background on the two main characters, a story about their childhood, Marcus and Rachels other friends. but I did find myself feeling that there could be more! That being said, that is probably the only thing that bothered me when I was reading the book.

The second book ‘Something Blue’ from what I have read is the same plot as ‘Something Borrowed’ but it is told from Darcy’s perspective.

SPOILER ALERT: I have read that Darcy moves in with Ethan! Which is totally not fair… because I secretly hoped that Ethan and Rachel would get together in the book!!! A girl can dream right? Oh John Krasinski… how I do adore you.

Emily Giffins third ‘Baby Proof’ from what I have read is completely different characters with a new plot line. So we won’t get into that. I am pretty sure that Baby Proof does not actually related to the first two books at all.. the more that I think about it. I think that it is the third book that Emily Giffin came out with. My friend lent me all three, and I assumed that they were a series..but I think that she just owned three of Emily Giffins books so she just lent them all to me.

Reading the second book ‘Something Blue’ should prove to be an interesting experience, I had grown so much to liking Rachels point of view that switching to Darcy’s in the second book may bother me somewhat. I sooo want the second book to be about how Rachel and Dex live their lives together, and how Ethan drives them apart.. or something like that! I will not be biased! I will read the second book with an open mind and then report back to you with my thoughts!

I enjoyed Emily Giffin as an author, and look forward to reading the other two books. She was easy to read, and a lot of the time I felt like it was so easy to communicate with the characters in the book because in some twisted way they related to your life. Hating your job, wanting a man you can’t have, having someone or something stomp on you your entire life, and always having someone one up you!! I can definitely relate. Can’t you?

April 26th, is Shannons birthday!! In celebration, while the entire family is gathered under one roof we decided to make some cupcakes! Below are the two links to the two types of cupcakes we made:

Jam Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting: http://www.marthastewart.com/282525/jam-cupcakes-with-chocolate-frosting?czone=food/best-cupcake-recipes/our-best-cupcakes

Banana Cupcakes with Honey Cinnamon Frosting: http://www.marthastewart.com/314063/banana-cupcakes-with-honey-cinnamon-fros

We started out with the Banana Cupcakes with a Honey Cinnamon Frosting:

Mashed Banana

Starting To Fill Cups

Then We Realised That We Had Forgotten To Add The BUTTER!!

So Shannon had just finished filling all the cups with the Banana cupcake filling when we noticed that we had forgotten the BUTTER!! We couldn’t believe it. So we had to take all the batter out of the cups and mix in the butter. Thus ruining our cups. There was no way to salvage them! We ended up not being able to use the cups for the Banana cupcakes as we ran out! LOL

We Had To Take All The Batter Out Of The Cups To Add The Butter 😦

FINALLY! Left: Banana Cupcakes, Right: Jam Filled Cupcakes

We didn’t actually remember to take any photos of making the Jam Filled Cupcakes. We did remember to take a picture of us filling them though!:

We Had To Cut A Hole In The Top To Fill With The Jam

Jam Inside

Number one thing to remember when experimenting with baking: Make sure that you have ALL ingredients. Do Not assume. We had to improvise with the Jam filling because we didn’t realize that we didn’t have any! Its our moms house, she always has everything 😛 So we decided to use the left over cranberry sauce that we had with dinner. Just added some Honey and Vanilla, blended it all together and Voila! Jam!

The actual cupcake batter for the Jam filled cupcakes was very simple. We decided that we would use this recipe again and make it our own by adding different ingredients!

More Photos to come!

Fam Shot!

Banana Cupcake with Cinnamon-Honey Frosting

23! Chocolate-Jam Filled Cupcakes are to the left!

Thanks for tuning in!! Shannon & Caitlin

Hi Everyone,

48 Hours Later and this two part review has come to a close.

My final thoughts on the Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Lip Colour:

I found that I liked this product when it dried a lot more than the Revlon one. It was a bit sticky when I dried, but then once the balm was applied over it, it was the perfect feel, it wasn’t drying throughout the day either! It was just liked letting your lips be your lips, if that makes sense. The colour that I chose was perfect for me, because for some reason I am a big fan of light pink frosted lips!

Lips prior to lip colourWith Lip Colour Applied

With Lip Colour Applied

I am sad to say that the colour did not last the 24 hours as expected. The Revlon one lasted through a shower, washing my face, and going for a run. I did the same with this lip colour and unfortunately it did not last through washing my face at the end of the night around 11:30. To be fair, it is hard to say whether or not the 24 hours as advertised includes washing your face. However, the Revlon one did seem to hold up through it. I applied the balm once at the beginning of the day when I waited for the colour to dry and didn’t feel the need to apply again throughout the day.

I like the Maybelline colour and wear a lot better. It wasn’t sticky throughout the day, the balm took that away and even though it didn’t last through as much as the Revlon one did, I don’t see myself wearing a colour for 24 hours anyway, so the long wear that I got from it sufficed. It was also nice that it came off at the end of the night when I washed my face, (aka: when I was ready for it to come off)as opposed to the Revlon lip colour that had to be removed with a makeup remover.

I liked the colour selection of the Maybelline better, they seemed to have a lot more variety in terms of textures and shades. If you are looking for a long wear lip colour that isn’t drying try this one out!  Its a great buy, especially since I got mine on sale at Wal-Mart. They’re both great lip products but when it comes down to it I would recommend the Maybelline Super Stay 24 Hour Colour.

Good Afternoon fellow bloggers/readers! Caitlin here.

This post, is a first and there are many more to follow. When Shannon and I first started this blog, we decided that we would also include make-up reviews on products to see if they live up to their claims!

Last night at the hour of about 8:00 we decided that it was time for our first review when we saw a commercial on the television for Revlon’s Colourstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick. This them prompted us to head on up to the local drugstore and buy us some lip colour! It was while we were at the store that we noticed Maybellines Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolour. What a great idea! Its on sale, and we can do a comparison!!

Their Claims:

Revlon Colourstay Ultimate Liquid Lipstick: One-step, food-proof lipcolor with a patented ColorStay™ technology that lasts up to 24 hours–(from the Revlon Website)

Maybelline Superstay 24 Hour Lipcolour:

Meet the 24-hour lipcolor that stretches the limits of longwear:
• Micro-Flex formula glides on and looks gorgeous all day
• No crumbling, no caking, no fading, no feathering, no transferring
• 2-step lipcolor in one pack
• 30 long-lasting shades

–(From the Maybelline website)

Pretty fancy eh? Shannon, being the busy bird she is, is sleeping, and well since this is a 24 hour lip colour challenge and it is already breaching the afternoon I decided to proceed with the Revlon lipstick first without her. Okay folks! Here we go!

Colour 001-Perfect Peony

Start time:

Bare Lips: lip balm was applied about 15 minutes prior to lipstick application

My first thoughts are that it applied very smoothly. It was also a lot sheerer than I imagined it being, making it a lipstick that I would defiantly wear a lot.

A very nice colour!

After about three minutes I did apply another layer, just for good measure. With most long wearing lip colours they do require you to wait a couple minutes in between coats. This did intensify the colour but not a whole lot.

Let the 24 Hours Begin!

1 Hour Later: After a couple minutes of allowing the colour to dry a bit, I noticed that it became sticky. The formula dried to a semi-matte finish,  no chunky glitter but a fine shimmer. I decided to wait a little while to see if it would dry completely… its been about an hour and half since I first applied the colour and its still sticky! I`m not too sure if it is a reflection of how I applied the colour. That being said, I just don`t enjoy sticky lip colours. As for dryness, it feels comfortable, a bit dry, any drier and I would want to put on a gloss or lipbalm on top. I will resist for the 24 hours if I can.

I just kissed Yuki (my all white cat) and there was no transfer. This is a good sign as it is supposed to be food and fade proof!

Update: 24 Hours Later:

My Lips had really dried out, but lets face it, if you are wearing a lip colour for 24 hours you`re bound to have some driness! Especially because I didn`t touch the colour up, nor did I apply a balm on top throughout the day.  The stickiness that I had mentioned did stick around, but it was strange because the colour didn`t transfer when I wiped my lips to see if the stickiness would go away. I showered, ate meals as usual, and went for a run! This lipstick really held up! I am very surprised and happy with the results. Shannon did eventually wake up, and when she did her makeup she did put her colour of choice on. She isn`t much of a lipstick person like I am, so she applied a light layer. Her colour held up, and I don`t know if she secretly wiped some of it off during the day, but I would say her`s lasted a good part of the 24 hours. She did mention that hers appeared to be a lot drier than mine. I think I`ll probably be the one testing lip products out from now on 😛 mostly because I looove to try new ones. If you plan to wear a colour for 24 hours then definitely check this one out! Today (April 23rd) I am testing out the Maybelline 24 Hour Superstay lipstick. Part 2 of this 24 hour lip colour review will be up tomorrow!

The comforting aroma of apple pie fills the house but arrives in a small, portable cookie package.  How delightful!

Cookies meet the brother test, who devoured two cookies even BEFORE caramel drizzle. Impressive. Most impressive.

Apple Pie Cookies

Butter or margarine, softened  1/2 cup

Brown sugar, packed  1.5 cups

Egg  1

All-Purpose Flour  2 Cups

Baking Soda  1 tsp.

Cinnamon  1 tsp.

Cloves  1/2 tsp.

Nutmeg   1/2 tsp.

Salt  1/2 tsp.

2 Apples, peeled and grated  1 cup

Chopped walnuts  1/2 – 1 cup

Milk  1/4 cup

Beat butter, sugar and egg in mixer until smooth.

In a separate bowl, stir flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg and salt together. Add to above ingredients and mix.

Stir in the apples, walnuts and milk. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto greased baking sheet. Bake in 400 F (200 C) oven for 8 to 10  minutes. When cool, drizzle with caramel. (Caramel Drizzle is, of course, optional. But it’s so quick and easy to make how could you not… Not to mention delicious!)

Caramel Drizzle

Butter or margarine  2 tbsp.

Brown sugar, packed  2 tbsp.

Icing (confectioner’s) sugar  3/4 cup

Milk  4 tsp.
Combine butter and sugar in a small saucepan. Stir and bring to a boil over medium heat. Simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from heat and add the icing sugar and milk. Add more milk or sugar if needed to make the proper drizzling consistency. Ready to drizzle!

With an excuse like Easter around the corner (or if you’re like us and need no excuse to indulge in apple pie cookie deliciousness) why not share the cookie love with friends or family and create cute little gifts. That is, of course, if they last long enough to make it to packaging.

Here we’ve arranged cookies in an Easter themed baggy and tied with ribbons to seal.

Gratutitous adorable kitty picture

Cue Yuki at the sound of swishing ribbon. Easter packaging and ribbons seem to meet Yuki approval.

About “We”

Hello! Welcome to our blog!
This blog is a product of two girls who have a minor (and by minor I mean major) addiction to all things beauty related, food and learning how to garden.
Life Deets: I’m at a ripe age of 20 years old, work at a Dance Studio (reception, I don’t have the coordination or the moves to be a dance teacher), and I am currently contemplating my education (I’ve dipped my toes into a couple different fields already). I am a vegetarian, and have a major addiction to looking at cute animals on the internet.
Shannon and I are about to embark on a wonderful journey of living together in our own home (accompanied by my boyfriend) for the first time. It is likely to be a very interesting/exciting experience as we have never lived together outside of my parents house on our own. This home, will be the experimental grounds for burning cookies, licking bowls, growing our own food and having a room completely dedicated to makeup (otherwise known as an office). This blog is the perfect way to report our adventures as we soak in the rays of summer.
I now pass the blog over to Shannon, but before I go, a picture of my pride and joy Yuki. Whom you may or may not have already seen around the blog already(btw, she is sleeping)

I’m Shannon, recent 23 year old and University graduate (BSc Psychology – for those of you who are curious).  After being in my comfortable student bubble for 4.5 years, it is finally time for me to branch out and get a real life (aka job and paying bills…). In the midst of all the working, and billing, I take great joy in the little things, and this blog will hopefully allow you to share in those with us.
My sister and I have always shared everything! From a room when we were younger, to our passion for animals, fitness, food, makeup and crafting! So naturally, we blog as a duo too.
I am so excited to be living in our own house together and this blog is a way for us to record our summer adventures. Driven by a relentless thirst for the imaginative, a hunger to express our creativity, and powered by cookie dough, we shall continue this blog in hopes of compiling some recipes, lessons learned and helpful ideas for you to read and enjoy 🙂
P.S  This is our other “baby” whose names consist of, but are not limited to: Pumpkin, Pookie, Moo, Moomer, Sweetness, you get the idea…

But What Does It Mean?

And by “it” of course we mean HappyLamp. Truth be told, it doesn’t mean anything. It is the product of a random blog name generator (who knew such a thing even existed!?). After pressing the “Randomize” button of said blog name generator, Happy and Lamp arose – Happy. Lamp. It was put through a rigourous decision process – and by rigorous of course we mean:

“It’s cute right?

Yes it’s cute.

Should we use it?

… Yes.

We like it!”

And thus, HappyLamp is born. A place where hobbies, food, makeup and life collide into one big, delicious… hobbyfoodmakeuplife pile. Mmmm.

What is to come? Tried and true recipes, experimental cooking (the good and the bad), makeup reviews, trials and tribulations of gardening and whatever else in life sparks our interest.
